Wiener Werkstätte Carpets (1903-1932)

The Werkstätte’s mission was to break down the barrier between the fine and applied arts to “raise the aesthetic standards of objects of daily use.” The integration of beauty and utility became the Werkstätte’s mantra. In addition, the rejection of hierarchy within the arts and their commitment to craft over machine production linked the Werkstätte’s manifesto to the many reformist and art movements taking place throughout Europe at the turn of the twentieth century. read more

The Last Project of Jean-Michel Frank

Nelson A. Rockefeller's apartment was famously decorated by Jean-Michel Frank. The French Modernist designed the interiors of Rockefeller's salon with a modern take on vintage furniture while incorporating other artists into his vision. Using Christian Bérard's carpet design, he tied the room together with Matisse and Léger paintings. Rockefeller's salon is just one of many the contributions Frank made to the design world. read more

An Age of Revolution: 18th Century European Carpets

Kips Bay Decorator Show House

FJ Hakimian was the unequivocal go-to source for antique and hand woven carpets at this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House. Inside the redbrick Georgian townhouse on the Upper East Side, five of the 18-total designers turned toward dealer Joseph Hakimian’s expertise in hand-selecting rugs to go with each designer’s theme. Vintage Swedish carpets and ornate French tapestries from the FJ Hakimian showroom on East 57th Street in Manhattan provide the thread that runs through these five rooms. read more
