The late 18th century was an age of revolution in art and design, and carpets were no exception. Turning away from the ornate formality of the Baroque and Rococo, weavers across Europe’s capitals embraced the lightness, elegant simplicity and informality of early neoclassicism, drawing on the forms and motifs of the ancient world newly unearthed in Rome, Naples and Athens.
