Swedish Flat Weave

Initialed: SCE

A saturated mustard-gold field is divided into three horizontal panels, each scattered with large stepped medallions in coral pink, lavender, slate blue, cream, olive green and dusty rose, arranged in offset rows. Thin striped bands of grey, ochre and multicolored flat-woven lines separate the panels, echoing the medallion palette in narrower proportions. The whole composition is framed by a plain soft sage-green border with a slim inner guard of black-and-white checkering along the top and bottom edges.

The field is organized as a grid of small rectangular compartments, each holding a hooked or key-shaped motif rendered in alternating tones of taupe, soft grey, and warm brown against an ivory ground. The repeating angular forms shift color from cell to cell, creating a subtle checkerboard rhythm across the surface. A plain ivory border frames the composition, with the woven monogram set into the lower right corner and loose warp fringe left exposed at the top edge.

The field is composed of narrow horizontal bands in alternating tones of pale blue and charcoal, each strip irregular in width and density, giving the surface a striated, almost tidal rhythm. There is no distinct border; the striping runs edge to edge, terminating in loose ivory-white fringe along the top and bottom. A detail view shows the individual strands lying in slightly uneven, overlapping courses, their frayed ends visible within the weave.

An ivory field centers on a lobed medallion filled with a rosette in soft coral and celadon, extending pendants toward the corners which are cut by muted sage spandrels dense with scrolling vine and floral sprays. Scattered blossoms and palmettes in coral, gold, and pale green fill the open ground, echoed in the wide border of repeating floral vine between narrow guard stripes. The palette stays consistently soft and faded, ivory and cream against pale coral and celadon throughout.
