Swedish Pile

Initialed: IHK (Ingrid Hellman-Knafve)

The field is a solid expanse of deep blue, its surface catching light unevenly so that the tone shifts from teal to near-navy across the surface. Slender floral-and-stem motifs, worked in a subtly darker blue, march along the top and bottom borders and rise partway up the two side edges, tapering off before reaching the upper corners. The overall composition reads as an open, largely unadorned centre framed by this restrained tonal patterning.

An elongated central medallion in olive green, filled with small rosettes and pierced by a lighter interior lozenge, sits within a sand-colored field scattered with rosette blossoms in rust, slate blue, and pale lavender. The wide border is composed of rows of circular medallions, each enclosing a four-pointed star flanked by small florets, repeated evenly along all four sides with a thin patterned guard stripe framing the inner edge. Colors throughout are muted golds, olive, terracotta red, dusty blue, and pale lilac against the warm neutral ground.

The field is organized in wide alternating bands of slate blue and warm tan, with no border framing the composition. Within the tan bands run narrow rows of small red bracket-shaped motifs alternating with brown square dots, set above thin striped guard lines in brown and cream. The repeat is regular from top to bottom, ending in plain woven selvages on all sides.

An open ivory field is crossed by a series of thin horizontal bands in dark green and flecked multicolor, giving the surface a quiet striped rhythm rather than a dense pattern. A wide flat border in mingled green, gold, and taupe tones frames the field on all sides, its texture varied by small threads of red, blue, and rust visible in the close-up detail. The corners meet plainly without cartouches or medallions, and the composition relies on tonal variation within the yarns themselves for its visual interest.

The field is filled edge to edge with a fine, even grid of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines, forming a lattice of small squares in pale sage green against a warm ivory ground. A narrow plain band of the same green frames the perimeter, uninterrupted by any border ornament. The surface is uniform throughout, with no central medallion, corner motifs, or inscription visible.
