Shades woven to the dimensions of the opening rather than cut down from a stock size, made principally in the Philippines and Japan. Abaca is the characteristic fibre, usually on a cotton thread, with silk, raffia and hemp among the others. These filter daylight instead of blocking it, keeping a room bright while softening the light and the view, and the same cloth can be made as a wall covering so that a room reads as one surface.
