Our textiles are woven two ways. Handwoven cloths come from hand looms in Japan, Italy, the Philippines, Spain, Peru, Colombia, Indonesia and South Africa; mechanical cloths come from a small, carefully chosen group of mills, principally in Italy with others in Belgium, Spain, Turkey and South Africa, woven in small batches to repeat in consistent runs and wider widths. Between them the fibers run from abaca, raffia, bamboo and woven wood to silk, alpaca, mohair, wool, cotton and linen, with silks from Lake Como, alpaca from the Andes, and Japanese washi and Karakami papers. The singular character of a hand-woven cloth and the consistency of a mill-woven one suit different schemes, and each section offers both. Standard widths and composition are given where they are recorded, for upholstery, curtains and shades, and walls, ceilings and room dividers.
