African Wool

Pure Wool Weave

The surface presents an open, undyed field composed of thick, nubby loops arranged in irregular horizontal bands of ivory and taupe. No border or central motif interrupts the texture; the pattern instead emerges from the natural contrast between the lighter and darker tufts, giving an overall speckled, organic appearance. A detail inset in the lower corner magnifies the looped construction, highlighting the varied thickness and soft, rounded shape of the individual tufts.

Wool Combination

The surface is worked entirely in undyed ivory tones, arranged in alternating horizontal bands of texture rather than color. Smooth, tightly nubbed rows sit beside stretches of loose, curling fringe that catches the light differently, giving the plain ground a quiet rhythm of high and low relief. A magnified detail in the lower corner shows the fringe's loosely twisted strands set against the dense, looped rows behind them.

Wool Combination

The surface presents a series of horizontal bands in varying shades of grey, alternating between a dense, nubby looped texture and flatter, ribbed sections. Two bands of loose, shaggy fringe-like tufts interrupt the tighter rows, giving an irregular, almost frayed rhythm across the piece. The palette stays within a narrow range of warm and cool greys, with occasional darker flecks scattered through the ground, and a detail inset at lower right highlights the close, looping structure of the pile.

Pure Wool

The field appears as an undyed, undecorated expanse of looped and knotted texture in shades of ivory and pale cream, with faint variations of tone drifting across the surface like natural striations. A detail inset at lower right magnifies the irregular, nubby loops that catch light unevenly, giving the plain ground a soft, tactile depth. No border, motif, or inscription interrupts the open field.

African Wool

The field is left entirely open, an undyed ivory ground flecked irregularly with dark brown and grey fibers, with no border, motif, or pattern to interrupt the surface. A circular inset at the lower right offers a close-up of the looped, textured surface, showing the same speckled mix of ivory, taupe, and charcoal at closer range. The edges are finished with a simple looped selvage along all sides.

Needlepoint

The field is divided into a regular grid of small squares on a golden ground, each compartment holding a single sprig of stylized flowers or a leaf rendered in muted red, green, and cream. A wide blue-violet border frames this grid with scrolling acanthus vines in gold and cream, punctuated at the corners and mid-sides by oval cartouches containing floral bouquets or urn-like vase forms. The overall palette contrasts the warm amber interior against the cooler blue border, with repeated small round medallions echoing the field's floral theme.

Needlepoint

Composed of 49 panels, each with a dark brown ground & varied floral motifs, enclosed by a liliac border of fruiting vines.  Provenance; The Christopher Hodsoll Collection.

Needlepoint

The field is organized in a repeating lattice of interlocking octagons and pinwheel-form stars, alternating ivory, deep red, and mustard-gold blossoms set within a fine dark grid. A wide border of trailing grapevine, curling leaves, and clustered fruit in olive, gold, and rust runs continuously around the perimeter, with cross-shaped corner motifs echoing the field's star forms.
